This machine uses a revolving type drum, an early predecessor to the IBM Selectric ball of the 1970s.
In the center of this photo is a blurry image of the small felt inked wheel which transfered ink to the type drum just before impressing the letter image onto the paper.

The type drum is easily removable allowing different drums to be quickly exchanged for different typefaces and characters for diffeent languages.
